Shayibu Abubakar becomes Asante Kotoko’s tenth signing of the window

Asante Kotoko have announced the signing of right-back Shayibu Abubakari on a three-year contract, following the successful completion of his medical.

The 21-year-old becomes the club’s tenth signing of the transfer window, as the Porcupine Warriors bolster their squad ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Abubakari joins from Karela United, having previously featured for Real Tamale United. He also enjoyed a brief stint in the Czech Republic with FK Mladá Boleslav.

An athletic and attack-minded full-back, Abubakari is known for his versatility and is equally comfortable operating as a winger. His arrival is expected to add depth and competition on the right side of defence, providing cover for Lord Amoah while Emmanuel Kotei continues his recovery from an ACL injury.

Speaking to Kotoko media after signing, Abubakari said:

“I’m still young and I see this as a big opportunity to progress in my career. This is a great environment to learn, and I’m particularly looking forward to working with Lord Amoah and pushing myself every day. I’m here to grow and to give everything for this club.”

His arrival brings Kotoko’s total number of new signings in this window to ten. The other new additions include Johnson Oppong, Francis Acquah, Aziz Dari, Joseph Amoah, Zakariah Fusseni, Hubert Gyau, Seth Kwadwo, Lord Adabo and Philip Amoh.

Head Coach Karim Zito, who recently led Kotoko to an FA Cup triumph, is keen to build on that momentum by mounting a strong Ghana Premier League campaign and making a significant impact in continental competition.

The squad is expected to depart for South Africa next week to participate in the Kaizer Chiefs Cup as part of their preseason preparations.
