Samuel Osei Kuffour: My 1991 U-17 World Cup win remains most cherished

Ghanaian football legend, Samuel Osei Kuffour, has revealed that winning the 1991 U-17 FIFA World Cup with the Black Starlets remains the most dear trophy to him.
Kuffour, who had a distinguished career spanning over a decade, reminisced about the glory days, stating that the U-17 World Cup triumph paved the way for his successful stint in Europe, particularly with Bayern Munich.

“The trophy which is most dear to me is the U-17 World Cup (1991) because without that, I wouldn’t have gone to Bayern Munich or had the chance to go to Europe,” Kuffour said in a recent interview with Sporty FM.

Kuffour’s impressive career saw him represent Ghana at every FIFA-organised tournament, including the U-17, U-20, Olympics, World Cup, and four Africa Cup of Nations appearances.

He earned 59 caps and scored three goals for the Black Stars after making his debut in 1993.
At the club level, Kuffour enjoyed a successful period with Bayern Munich from 1993 to 2005, winning numerous titles, including the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and Intercontinental Cup.
He also featured for Torino, AS Roma, Livorno, and Ajax during his playing career.
Kuffour’s outstanding contributions to African football earned him recognition from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which named him one of the 30 best African footballers of all time.
He was also twice runner-up in the Africa Footballer of the Year award in 1999 and 2001.
Samuel Osei Kuffour announced his retirement from professional football in September 2008, leaving behind a legacy as one of Ghana’s most accomplished footballers.
