‘Trent Alexander-Arnold must be dropped’ – Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher advises Arne Slot to start Trent Alexander-Arnold from the bench in the last five games

Carragher thinks Trent should be starting from the bench

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Arne Slot to drop Trent Alexander-Arnold for the rest of the season, despite getting a late winner against Leicester City to push them closer to the title this season.

Carragher advises that the Reds’ vice-captain shouldn’t be in the starting XI for the rest of the foreseeable games left to end the campaign.

The uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old’s future still lingers with just five games left to end the season, and he is yet to agree a deal that will see him extend his contract.

The England international has been absent since he sustaining an ankle injury in March, when Liverpool lost to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last-16.

He only featured in his first game since his return, replacing Conor Bradley, and scoring the winner with his left foot for the first time in his career.

Despite his immediate impact from the bench after five minutes, pundit and Liverpool legend Carragher believes the versatile right-back should stay behind Bradley in the pecking order until the end of the season.

Asked who he would start against Tottenham next weekend, the ex-defender told Sky Sports: “Conor (Bradley).

“If this title wasn’t sewn up and it was edge and edge with Arsenal, you put your player on the pitch which is Trent.

“But Liverpool have won the league, that’s why you have to give him (Bradley) his head now with five games to go. Start him in all these games.

“He’ll have good games, he’ll have bad games. He’s a young defender, but give him that experience and then you get to the summer and you make your decision what you’re doing.”

In Trent’s absence, Bradley has not looked out of place, starring in his second consecutive game against Leicester, with Alexander-Arnold only fit enough to come off the bench.

Carragher questioned Alexander-Arnold’s commitment to staying at Anfield next season and why he thinks I only makes sense starting him from the bench.

Carragher added: “If Trent hasn’t committed, which he hasn’t obviously to the manager for next season, then he shouldn’t be starting games. He shouldn’t be.

“Yes, bring him (Alexander-Arnold) on as you did today if you maybe need to go and win the game, maybe against Spurs or a couple of weeks after that.

“But in terms of starting games right now, if Trent hasn’t committed to the club, which he obviously hasn’t, Conor Bradley should be starting every game.”
