Federico Valverde has released a heartfelt apology to Real Madrid fans, who suffered a third heartache at the hands of FC Barcelona on Saturday night in the Copa del Rey final.

Barca entrenched themselves over Madrid in what was an end-to-end fixture that went all the way into extra time when Jules Kounde struck a stunner to give the Catalans the lead and ultimately secure their 32nd Copa del Rey title in history.

Valverde was one of Real’s key players contributing in every department of the field, and has now sent out an apology to the fans about the heartbreaking result, insisting that his team will respond next season after a difficult campaign this term.

““It happened again. And it will surely happen again many more times, because it is the road we are building and it is normal that one falls after so many miles. It makes me sad, it makes me angry, impotent. I feel like I failed you”, he said.

It’s been a difficult year, physically and mentally very tough, but one day I was clear: ‘until my legs don’t give up anymore’. This club doesn’t deserve less. We’ll be back, we’ll continue and there I’ll be leaving everything for the respect Madrid deserves, its people and everything that involves playing in the most winning team in history. Thank you”, Valverde added.

Madrid’s third classico loss this season is not the last time they would be facing their bitter rivals Barcelona. In the next fortnight on May 10, the two teams go toe-to-toe in La Liga, where the Catalans have a four-point lead on the league standings.

That would be Real’s last opportunity to beat Barcelona this season, and Valverde will be aiming to make the most of that fixture to bring some joy onto the faces of Madrid fans all over the world.
