Virgil Van Dijk on Liverpool win

Virgil van Dijk has disclosed that there has been “progress” in contract talks with Liverpool, hinting that a resolution may soon be reached regarding his ongoing contract situation at Anfield.

The Reds captain, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, is out of contract at the end of the current season.

Despite being in talks over new terms for several months, an agreement has yet to be finalised.

Van Dijk had previously shared, shortly before the Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle United three weeks ago, that he was still uncertain about his future beyond the expiration of his contract.

The 33-year-old has been at Anfield since January 2018

However, after the 3-2 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, the Netherlands defender provided a brief update.

“There is progress, yeah,” Van Dijk said. “I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. Listen (laughs), these are internal discussions and we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them but I want them to be there Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us. We have to make it work and we will.”

Van Dijk also discussed the return of Conor Bradley, who has been sidelined for around six weeks due to a hamstring issue, as well as the potential comeback of Alisson Becker.

The Brazil international has missed the last three matches for both club and country following a suspected concussion sustained while playing for Brazil against Colombia.

“Listen, anyone that can come back and help us to try and win games is very important and the whole squad is so it’s good to see Conor coming back and hopefully he can stay fit now and be important for the rest of the season,” Van Dijk added.

“Hopefully Alisson is back soon but these things are dangerous and the most important thing is for him to be healthy and he doesn’t have the green light yet if I’m correct. We wait for that and we’ll see.”
