Real Madrid maintains top spot in La Liga standings with a five-point gap after Clasico win

Xabi Alonso secures first El Clasico win of the season

Xabi Alonso secured his first El Clasico victory as Real Madrid manager in his debut clash against arch-rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu during his opening La Liga season on Sunday.

Kylian Mbappe opened Madrid’s scoring with a brilliant shot from inside the area, thanks to a clever pass from Jude Bellingham that set Alonso’s side ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute, energising the Madrid fans into a riotous celebration.

Madrid were pinned back on level terms with a decisive finish from Barcelona forward Fermin Lopez on 38 minutes, following a pinpoint cut-back by Marcus Rashford from the left side of the attack.

Bellingham restored the lead for Los Blancos after Barcelona’s defence struggled to handle Vinícius Jr.’s cross inside the area. Militao jumped the highest to connect with an unmarked Bellingham, who slotted home from close range to make it 2-1 in the first 45 minutes.

The home side had the opportunity to double their advantage shortly after the break when Eric Garcia was punished for a handball in the penalty area, only for Szczesny to save Mbappe’s spot-kick.

Vinicius nearly stole the show, following his substitution in the 72nd minute for fellow Brazilian Rodrygo. He appeared furious at the technical team for taking him off the game when he stormed down the tunnel.

Barca huffed and puffed in search of a second equaliser, but their lack of options off the bench was exposed as they failed to create much of note to test Thibaut Courtois. Both sides failed to conjure any clear-cut chance to score a goal in the second half.

Madrid emerged victorious from the biggest game in club sport having previously gone four without a win against their fiercest rivals.
