“I made the decision that felt right”- Nico Williams on not joining Barca last summer

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has insisted he made the ‘decision that felt right’ to stay at his boyhood club despite talks of a possible transfer to Spanish giants FC Barcelona last summer.

Williams was the center of rumors last year after a scintillating run in EURO 2024, where he helped Spain secure their fourth European Cup, partnering Barca teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in attack.

Williams chose to stay at Bilbao for at least a further year, and that decision led fans over the world criticizing his choice, believing Barcelona as the best destination for him at the time.

Now, Nico has revealed to outlet FF he believed staying was the best decision at the time, insisting Bilbao as more than just a club but a family in his own life.

“Athletic is my family. The bond we have within the club is incredible. I don’t think I’d find this atmosphere anywhere else. At that moment, I made the decision that felt right, and I’m very happy with it.”

This season, Williams has clinched 10 goal contributions in all competitions. Though he still has a long way to go in being consistent, he appears happy to stay at his boyhood club, though reports indicate a possible move away from Spain is on the cards this summer.
