Arne Slot wants Virgil van Dijk to stay at Liverpool next season

Van Dijk has confirmed that discussions between his representatives and Liverpool are ongoing

Arne Slot has expressed his desire for Virgil van Dijk to extend his stay at Liverpool after the centre-back admitted earlier this week that he has “no idea” whether he will remain at the club next season.

Van Dijk’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, along with those of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While Slot did not provide an update on negotiations between Van Dijk and the club, he reiterated his wish to retain the 33-year-old, who has been a key figure for Liverpool this season.

“I don’t know what is happening next season either, in terms of results, but I know that’s not what you mean,” said Slot in his press conference ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

“The only thing I know is that I want Virgil to be here next season. All the rest is talk about contracts and that’s not what I do. It doesn’t [impact planning], not for me.”

Van Dijk Provided an Update on Liverpool Future

Virgil van Dijk earlier disclosed that he is unsure whether he will remain at Liverpool beyond this season, insisting that anyone claiming otherwise is lying.

The Reds captain confirmed that discussions between his representatives and the club are ongoing, with his current contract set to expire on June 30.

“|’ve no idea,” the Netherlands defender said.

“I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment. Talks aren’t on hold, nothing’s on hold. I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go and that’s my full focus.

“At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they’re lying to your face.”
