Lazio defender Mario Gila has been called up by Luis De La Fuente to join the Spanish national team after Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi picked up an injury on Thursday night in La Roja’s 2-2 away stalemate with the Netherlands.
Cubarsi is widely regarded as one of the best young center backs around, yet Spain will be unable to count on his services after the teenager secured an ankle sprain in Rotterdam.

In his place comes 24-year-old Gila of the Italian top flight league.
Reports from the Spanish camp indicates that the decision was made to prevent Cubarsi and any other player from being at risk as Spain looks to progress to the last four at the expense of the Dutch.
Gila could feature in the home game for La Roja, yet Real Madrid’s Raul Asencio looks the best defender to partner Robin Le Normand in the second-leg in place of Cubarsi.
