Man United considering move to trigger Matheus Cunha’s release clause

Cunha is under contract at Molineux until 2029

Manchester United are considering a summer swoop for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as their struggles in front of goal persist, according to GOAL.

United have lacked consistency in attack throughout the season, with high-profile signings Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund managing just six Premier League goals between them.

In response, the club are reportedly weighing up a move to activate Cunha’s £62.5million ($82m) release clause.

The Brazilian is under contract at Molineux until 2029, meaning Wolves are under no pressure to negotiate a lower fee.

His impressive form this season has attracted interest from several Premier League sides, including Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Since making his move to Wolves permanent in 2023, Matheus Cunha has been a standout performer, netting 15 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old is expected to lead the line for Wolves when they host Spurs on Sunday.

A week later, he could be facing another of his potential suitors as Wolves travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Easter Sunday.

Matheus Cunha has been instrumental for Wolves this season

The Brazil international missed the Wolves’ last four matches due to a suspension following his red card against Bournemouth. He was sent off during the FA Cup fifth-round tie after an altercation with Milos Kerkez.

His initial three-match ban was extended to four, which was served after Wolves’ win over Ipswich last Saturday.

Cunha signed permanently from Atletico Madrid in 2023, following a successful loan spell. In February, he extended his stay with a new four-year deal.
