Barcelona boss Hansi Flick criticises Real Madrid over referee treatment

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has criticised Real Madrid for their treatment of Copa del Rey final referee Ricardo de Burgos Benegoechea.
Speaking at his Friday press conference, Flick defended referees, stressing that the game must show them more respect.

The former Bayern Munich boss also indirectly addressed Madrid’s actions, stating, “It’s not fair play to neglect the well-being of referees.”
The controversy began on Thursday when Real Madrid released a video on their club TV channel, accusing Bengoetxea of bias against the club.
The video pointed to Barcelona’s higher winning percentage in matches officiated by the veteran referee, raising suspicions of partiality.
As a result, Madrid requested a change in the officiating team, although they have since toned down discussions of a potential boycott.

In response to the video, Bengoetxea held a press conference where he revealed that his son had been subjected to bullying due to the ongoing situation.
Flick said: “For me, it’s just sport, it’s just football. We have to protect everyone involved in the game.
“The fans, they all want to see the players, how they play. We need the referees, and we have to look after them and be careful. It’s not fair play not to look after them, it’s not showing them respect.”
Real Madrid have officially confirmed their intention to participate in tomorrow’s Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Barcelona.
This announcement comes just hours after several football outlets reported that the Spanish giants were considering withdrawing from the final, which is set to be held in Seville.
Reports indicated that Real Madrid’s concerns stemmed from issues regarding the appointed referee and VAR officials for the match, with the club reportedly demanding changes to the officiating team.
