Barcelona boosted by Inigo Martinez return ahead of El Clasico

Martinez has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season

Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez has fully recovered from a recent injury and is expected to feature in the upcoming Clasico.

He suffered a minor muscle strain during Barcelona’s Champions League semi-final clash against Inter Milan.

Martinez requested a substitution in the 76th minute after feeling discomfort, with Ronald Araujo taking his place.

However, the veteran defender now appears to be ready for the highly anticipated clash.

According to Javi Miguel, initial tests have ruled out a hamstring injury, confirming that Martinez’s issue was a minor muscle strain.

Provided there are no setbacks, he is expected to be available for the Clasico on Sunday.

His substitution in the second half saw a shift in momentum, as Araujo’s presence on the field coincided with Inter Milan scoring their last two goals.

Miguel also confirmed that Alejandro Balde, who has been sidelined with an injury since April 13, has returned to training and is likely to receive medical clearance to play.

A win for Barcelona in the Clasico would extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table

However, Balde is expected to start on the bench, with Gerard Martin retaining his place in the starting lineup following a series of solid performances in recent matches.

Martinez has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing three goals and six assists.

His performances have been crucial to Barcelona’s defensive efforts, in stark contrast to his limited involvement last season under coach Xavi.

With Martinez now fit, coach Hansi Flick is expected to maintain the same defensive setup used in the second leg against Inter.

A win for Barcelona in the Clasico would extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table to seven points over Real Madrid.
