Enzo Maresca has revealed his unconventional demands of Chelsea’s players, urging fans to temper their expectations regarding his preferred playing style.
The Chelsea boss remained resolute in his approach after his side narrowly defeated Leicester City 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, thanks to a 60th-minute strike from Marc Cucurella.
Despite the win, the home fans at Stamford Bridge were not pleased with the team’s performance, frequently expressing their discontent with loud reactions to the hosts’ patient build-up play.
However, Maresca made it clear that he has no intention of altering his tactical philosophy after securing a crucial three points.
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez, in particular, felt the brunt of the frustration, with some fans jeering him when he passed the ball backwards.
Maresca, though, explained that Fernandez was simply following the tactical instructions, reinforcing the need for patience and precision in Chelsea’s approach.
Speaking to reporters, the Italian coach said: “Yeah, but the good thing is that Fernandez knows that if he doesn’t play back, I will change him. If the ‘keeper plays long, I will change him. This is what we have.”
He added: “My message to Filip (Jorgensen) was: “If you play long ball, I will change you.’ So he was just doing what I told him to.”
