Decision on Dani Olmo’s Barcelona registration imminent

Olmo has been playing for Barcelona on an emergency licence

The president of Spain’s Football Council, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, has confirmed that a decision on Dani Olmo’s Barcelona registration will be made in the “next few days”.

Olmo has been playing for Barcelona on an emergency licence, which was granted after La Liga rejected the club’s attempts to extend his initial temporary agreement.

The licence was awarded until December 31, 2024, following Andreas Christensen’s serious injury, but Barcelona’s efforts to extend it into the second half of the season were unsuccessful.

The issue has sparked a tense legal battle, with Barcelona appealing directly to the government’s sporting branch.

The government ultimately decided to allow Olmo to continue playing for Barcelona while a final verdict was debated.

According to Uribes, a final decision will be reached by April 7.

While several clubs have expressed disappointment over the decision to allow Olmo to continue playing, it has been claimed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was instrumental in getting Olmo’s licence temporarily extended.

Uribes acknowledged the surprise surrounding Real Madrid’s involvement, stating that “football is sometimes very funny, they bring up curious things”.

He added that Real Madrid seems to be “delighted” with Olmo, which has been seen as a surprising development given the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Uribes expressed gratitude towards Real Madrid for respecting the CSD’s decision, noting that 80% or 90% of clubs have also understood the situation.

The decision on Dani Olmo’s registration has significant implications for Barcelona, who have been relying on the player’s contributions this season.

Olmo has scored seven goals and provided five assists in all competitions, making him a crucial part of the team.

A favourable decision would allow Olmo to continue playing for Barcelona, while an unfavourable decision could force the club to seek alternative options.
