Ghana to abolish 10% tax on sports betting

Government moves to fulfill campaign promise by scrapping betting tax.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced the government’s decision to remove the 10% withholding tax on sports betting, ensuring bettors receive their full winnings.

The tax, introduced by the previous Akufo-Addo administration to regulate gambling and boost state revenue, faced widespread criticism from bettors who viewed it as burdensome.

Dr Forson’s announcement aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to scrap the betting tax and other levies described as “nuisance taxes.”

“We will abolish the 10% withholding tax on betting,” Dr. Ato Forson declared during the 2025 budget presentation in Parliament on March 11.

Once the budget is approved, the government will move to eliminate the tax, bringing relief to many betting enthusiasts.
