Inter extend Serie A lead with 2-0 win at Atalanta

Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Serie A to three points with a hard-fought 2-0 win at third-placed title rivals Atalanta on Sunda, March 16, 2025. The match was intense from the start, with both sides creating scoring opportunities in the first half. However, it was Inter who eventually broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, when Carlos Augusto headed in from a corner.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 81st minute, when midfielder Ederson was sent off for two quick bookings. Despite being a man down, Atalanta pushed hard for an equalizer, but Inter sealed the win three minutes from time, when Lautaro Martínez scored. Inter were also reduced to 10 men in added time, when Alessandro Bastoni was dismissed.

Lautaro Martínez’s strike seals victory for Inter

The win moves Inter to 64 points, three clear of second-placed Napoli, who were held to a 0-0 draw at second-from-bottom Venezia earlier on Sunday. Atalanta remain on 58 points, five adrift of Napoli. Meanwhile, Juventus suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at Fiorentina, heaping further pressure on under-fire manager Thiago Motta.

Juve, who were hammered 4-0 by Atalanta last weekend, were two goals down early on in Florence. Fiorentina’s Robin Gosens opened the scoring in the 15th minute, before Nicolò Fagioli, on loan at Fiorentina from Juve, played a through-ball into Rolando Mandragora, who scored from outside the area.

The defeat is Juventus’ second successive heavy loss, and manager Thiago Motta is under increasing pressure to turn things around. With the Serie A title race heating up, Inter’s win at Atalanta has given them a crucial advantage over their rivals.
