Mats Hummels’ spell with Roma set to end this summer

Mats Hummels’ underwhelming season with Roma is likely to come to an end this summer, with the 2014 World Cup winner struggling to make an impact on the pitch. Despite signing a one-year contract with the Serie A side after leaving Borussia Dortmund last year, Hummels has failed to convince Roma to extend his contract.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 36-year-old’s disappointing performances and lack of playing time have made it almost certain that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Hummels has made just 11 starts in Serie A this season and has spent the majority of the campaign on the bench. He has struggled to win over any of the three managers Roma have employed since his arrival in September, and his performances have left a lot to be desired.

Problems began to surface under Ivan Juric, who sensed a motivation issue that limited Hummels’ playing time. Things haven’t improved much under Claudio Ranieri, who has deployed Hummels just three times in the past eight Serie A games.

Hummels’ disappointing season hit a new low on Thursday when he was sent off for a lunge in the second leg of the Europa League tie with Athletic Bilbao. The defender took to social media to apologize to Roma fans and his teammates.

However, his use of social media has irked fans who feel he should be focusing on his footballing performances more.Roma fans have grown disillusioned with Hummels, and it seems unlikely that the club will justify paying his annual salary of €3.6 million to a player who is making little impact on and off the pitch.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it appears that Hummels’ spell with Roma is coming to a disappointing end.
