Trent Alexander-Arnold verbally agrees to join Real Madrid

Alexander-Arnold has ended months of speculation over his future

Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly agreed to a verbal deal to join Real Madrid, pending final legal details of the deal to be completed, according to Sky Sports News.

Alexander-Arnold ended months of speculation over his future on Monday, confirming his Liverpool exit on his X(Twitter) page ahead of a free transfer to Real Madrid in the summer.

The 26-year-old came through the Liverpool academy and has made 352 appearances for the first team, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Per the reports, no contract has been signed yet with Spanish giants, but Sky Sports News understands Alexander-Arnold has a verbal agreement in place to join the 15-time European champions this summer.

The English International helped Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup trophies in 2019, and also lifted two Carabao Cups, one FA Cup, and one Community Shield in an illustrious career at Merseyside.

The Liverpool vice-captain started this season as one of the three key Liverpool players out of contract in the summer, and while Liverpool extended Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s deals by two years, they will lose Alexander-Arnold for free.

Alexander-Arnold admitted in an interview with LFC TV that there was the possibility of staying at the club, but revealed he needed a change in his career.

Asked if staying at Liverpool was ever a possibility, Alexander-Arnold said: “One hundred per cent, a massive possibility.

Despite the current revelation about a verbal agreement set in place, Sky Sports News has revealed that the club felt they did everything in their power to make him stay.

Liverpool had initiated contract talks with the defender, a move understood to be a long-term priority for the Reds, with discussions dating back to last season.

It is recorded that the new sporting director Richard Hughes, appointed last summer, even contacted Alexander-Arnold’s representatives about a new contract before starting his role.

Hughes then commenced formal negotiations after Arne Slot had been appointed as the new head coach.

The contract terms offered would have made Trent the best-paid full-back not just in the Premier League, but also in world football.

However, after realising that a new agreement was not possible, as the defender had his heart set on Madrid, all efforts were pulled back from negotiation.

The final meeting between Hughes and Alexander-Arnold’s camp came between March and May, after Liverpool had rejected a bid from Real Madrid in the January transfer window. That was the moment he told Slot he would be leaving the club.

Without any late twist to the verbal agreement, Alexander-Arnold is expected to join as a new Real Madrid player, potentially playing a big role for Los Blancos in the Club World Cup competition set for June.
