William Gallas rules out Chelsea stay for Jadon Sancho after disappointing loan spell

Sancho joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United last summer

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has insisted that Jadon Sancho should not remain at Stamford Bridge beyond this season, following the England winger’s underwhelming loan spell.

Sancho joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United last summer, hoping to rediscover his form after being frozen out at Old Trafford.

Initially, he impressed under Enzo Maresca, but the 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact lately.

He last scored on December 8 in a Premier League match against Tottenham and hasn’t registered a goal involvement since providing an assist in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on January 4.

Sancho started against Arsenal on Sunday but failed to make a meaningful contribution.

Chelsea have an obligation to purchase Sancho from Manchester United for around £25million, provided they finish higher than 14th in the Premier League.

With the Blues currently sitting in fourth, that obligation seems all but guaranteed.

However, the club can opt out of the deal by paying a fee to United, and Gallas believes that based on Sancho’s current form, a permanent move to Chelsea is unlikely.

Gallas, who made 225 appearances for Chelsea between 2001 and 2006, said that Sancho needs to do more to earn a permanent transfer.

“He’s a talented player, everybody knows this, but we don’t know why he can’t perform and can’t show what he can do,” the former centre-back told Stadium Astro.

“At Dortmund, he was magnificent. At Manchester United it didn’t work well for him. He came to Chelsea and at the beginning we saw that Sancho from Dortmund, but then he disappeared.

“I don’t know what the problem is, but at the moment he can’t stay at Chelsea because he has to do more.”

Jadon Sancho featured for 76 minutes against Arsenal but had just 34 touches, none of which occurred inside the Arsenal box. He also failed to register a shot on target.
