Chelsea lose ground in Champions League race to Newcastle

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring just 112 seconds into the match

Newcastle United took a significant step toward securing Champions League football next season with a crucial 2-0 victory over 10-man Chelsea at St James’ Park.

The two sides began the day level on 63 points, but the Magpies seized the early advantage when Sandro Tonali opened the scoring just 112 seconds into the match, finishing from close range to give the hosts the perfect start.

Chelsea’s hopes suffered a major blow 10 minutes before halftime when Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a reckless forearm smash on Sven Botman – an unnecessary challenge that left his side with a mountain to climb.

In response, manager Enzo Maresca reshuffled his attack, deploying Cole Palmer as a false nine.

The change sparked a more positive second-half display from the visitors, with goalkeeper Nick Pope called into action to deny both Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez with sharp saves.

Reece James also squandered a golden opportunity to equalize, firing wide when well placed.

Ultimately, Newcastle held firm and sealed the three points in stoppage time when Bruno Guimaraes’ effort deflected off Malo Gusto and looped over Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, putting the result beyond doubt.

“Difficult. It’s already difficult 11-v-11 in this stadium, against this team. Playing one hour with 10 players has not been easy,” Enzo Maresca said.

“I think the second half the team showed spirit, togetherness. I think it is from there we need to keep the same feeling, same energy for Friday’s game.

“Some times in this stadium you have the feeling that some decisions are from the noise. Again, if the referee decides it’s a red card, it’s a red card.”
