Arsenal unveil new midfield signing Bruno Guimaraes

Premier League champions Arsenal have officially unveiled their new midfield signing, Bruno Guimaraes, during a pre-season friendly against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, in front of the ecstatic fans for the very first time on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, who signed the Brazilian midfielder for a transfer fee worth £75 million from Premier League rivals Newcastle United, continue to reinforce their squad in defence of the league title in the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old versatile midfielder made his first Emirates appearance as an Arsenal player, wearing his favourite No. 39 jersey. The Brazilian midfielder walked out of the tunnel, and the Arsenal fans gave him a warm welcome.

He’s Arsenal’s second-most expensive signing, behind Declan Rice. He will be joining a group of midfielders which includes Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The former Magpies captain, who had two years remaining on his contract at St. James’ Park, with an option for a third, is Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta’s side have also secured the signature of Christos Tzolis, goalkeeper Illan Meslier and center-back Piero Hincapié on a permanent transfer this summer, after triggering his selling clause in his loan deal.

During his time at Newcastle, Bruno Guimaraes recorded 195 total appearances, while scoring 31 goals across all competitions before departing the club.

He joined the Premier League side from French Ligue 1 club Lyon on January 30, 2022, for an initial transfer fee of £35 million plus £6.6 million in potential add-ons, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal at St. James’ Park.

The midfielder captained the side to a 2–1 victory against Liverpool in the final on March 16, 2025, in a historical feet that secured Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

That was their first silverware of any kind in 56 years, while becoming the first Magpies captain to lift a major domestic trophy since 1955.

Upon his unveiling before Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund, Bruno Guimaraes told fans: “Like I said, I’m your warrior, I’ll never give up. Hopefully we can create many, many good memories together.”

In his first interview, he further expressed his excitement for a new challenge and his commitment to the supporters:

The Brazilian star said: “Well, I feel good, I feel amazing. I’m glad for the opportunity. Since the first time I spoke to [Arsenal sporting director Andrea] Berta and Mikel [Arteta], I was excited.

“I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life.

“I’m so excited to join them, not only the Brazilians, we have an amazing squad here. I’m so excited to meet the other players, to start training. I just want to give my best.

“I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.

“We have tough games to play this season, so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams.”
