Bayern officials believed they had secured Wirtz’s commitment, but the player’s unexpected decision has left the club reeling and scrambling to adjust their transfer plans for the summer window.

In response to Wirtz’s departure, Bayern Munich has quickly shifted its attention to Dutch winger Cody Gakpo, who is currently on their shortlist for a high-profile signing.

Gakpo, who is under contract with Liverpool until 2028 and valued at around €50-60 million, is also being considered by Bayern as a potential replacement for their now-official target, Florian Wirtz.

The Dutch star is seen as a versatile option for the left-wing position, with Bayern already making contact regarding his possible transfer.

Gakpo’s potential departure from Liverpool has sparked speculation that Bayern could be one of three possible destinations should he leave Anfield this summer.

The other two options reportedly include Kaoru Mitoma and Rafael Leao, with Bayern’s interest in Gakpo intensifying amid ongoing negotiations.

Liverpool, meanwhile, is open to offers for the 26-year-old Dutchman, which could pave the way for a lucrative transfer for the Bundesliga giants.

Some observers suggest Bayern’s move for Gakpo might be part of a larger strategy to finance Liverpool’s signing of Wirtz by offloading one of their excess forwards for a good fee.

This approach would not only strengthen Bayern’s attacking options but also mark a historic signing, as Gakpo would be their first Dutch winger since Arjen Robben.

Coupled with Michael Olise, Gakpo could revive the Dutch-French connection reminiscent of Robben and Franck Ribéry’s legendary partnership.
