‘We don’t need a big squad’ – Ruben Amorim on Man United transfers

Manchester United will struggle to recruit in the transfer window because they failed to qualify for European Football

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, in what sounds like a disappointing tone, has revealed that the club cannot “do much” in the summer transfer window.

Amorim confirms, however, that the club is planning to strengthen even after losing out Champions league qualification this season.

The former Sporting CP boss gives a stark assessment of Man Utd’s transfer posture, insisting that the Red Devils “don’t need a big squad” after Champions League failure.

The Portuguese manager admits that United will struggle to add more players to their squad this summer, having failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing 1-0 in the Europa League final to English rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

He has warned fans to lower their expectations, not to expect a lot of incomings in the transfer window, as he plans to operate with a smaller squad than usual. Amorim only guided United to a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.

Despite United’s early transfer moves by agreeing a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, the club is expected to oversee several exits to balance their books.

Rumours continue to surface around a potential transfer for, arguebly, their best player in over two season – they are fighting to keep Bruno Fernandes amid interest from Saudi Arabia – throwing huge figure at the Porteguese midfielder.

Amorim told reporters in Malaysia: “Omar [Berrada, United CEO] is here, he can explain it better than I can. We always prepare two plans, one with the Champions League, one without the Champions League.

“Without the Champions League, we don’t need a big squad, we can control the squad in a better way, then we have a plan which is to bring in some new players, of course, but our big plan is to improve the squad we have, to improve our academy, that’s the future, we’re not allowed to do much this summer.

“It’s important to stay together. We’re going to have difficulties, it’s not going to be everything straight away, but I see the team improving and that’s the most important thing,”
