West Ham star Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges

Paqueta has been vindicated for his innocence on FA’s spot-fixing charges

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta, whom the FA had allegedly accused of intentionally seeking a card from referees to manipulate the betting market, has been cleared of all spot-fixing charges following a thorough FA investigation.

The Premier League club has backed the Brazilian throughout the preliminary investigation since the allegation emerged in May last season.

The former Lyon maestro had described the issue as a “nightmare”, then, and Hammers were worried he “may not be in a fit state of mind” to play again during the 2024/25 season, according to The Telegraph.

In a statement following the FA’s final verdict, the London club expressed confidence in Paqueta’s innocence and commended the midfielder for his professionalism throughout the process.

West Ham said in a statement on Thursday afternoon: “The club has stood by Lucas since the very start of a long and difficult process.

“West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady said: “We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the outset, and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process.

“Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout and he is now looking forward to drawing a line under this episode, as is everyone at West Ham United.”

The 27-year-old, who denied earlier allegations and had his lawyers request an FA investigation into the leak of case details, reaffirmed his innocence after the final verdict.

Lucas Paqueta said: “Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations. I can’t say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face.

“To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends, and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.”

Lucas Paqueta is vindicated of all charges against him for spot-fixing

The Brazil international, who denied the charges, faced accusations of spot-fixing in four Premier League matches: against Leicester City in November 2022, Aston Villa in March 2023, Leeds United in May 2023, and Bournemouth in August 2024.

However, The FA said two charges against Paqueta related to a failure to co-operate with its investigation had been found proven.

The player also denied this charge, which the commissions has found to be proven.

“The Regulatory Commission found them to be proven following the hearing. It will decide an appropriate sanction for these breaches at the earliest opportunity,” The FA said in a statement.

“The FA awaits the Regulatory Commission’s written reasons concerning its decisions on the charges, and will not be commenting further until that time.”
