Hearts of Oak held to goalless draw by Hohoe United in season opener

Hearts are now winless in their last seven opening-day fixtures

Accra Hearts of Oak were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by newly promoted Hohoe United on the opening day of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening.

The Phobians dominated possession and created the better chances, but their lack of cutting edge in front of goal cost them all three points, despite playing much of the second half with a numerical advantage.

Hearts started brightly, controlling the tempo, but rarely tested goalkeeper Musa of Hohoe United. The visitors, however, showed great composure, staying compact at the back and threatening on the counter. They almost grabbed the opener when Ganiu Abass forced Benjamin Asare into a smart save, while Hearts came close through Frank Duku, whose effort was also denied.

After a goalless first half, the second period followed a similar pattern. Hohoe United nearly stunned the home side in the 55th minute, but William Oduro’s weak finish was comfortably saved.

Coach Didi Dramani responded with a double substitution in the 65th minute, introducing George Paaku and Hamza Issah to inject more attacking spark. Moments later, Hohoe United were reduced to ten men after defender Solomon Adomako picked up a second yellow card.

Despite piling on the pressure, Hearts could not find a breakthrough, with the visitors’ defense holding firm until the final whistle.

The result means Hearts of Oak have now extended their unbeaten run in the Ghana Premier League to eight matches but remain without a win in their last seven opening-day fixtures.
