Cash-strapped Barcelona attempted to hijack Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid

Barcelona made a late attempt to hijack Trent Alexander-Arnold’s proposed move to Real Madrid by meeting with the Liverpool star’s agents earlier in the season.
According to Cadena SER (h/t SPORT), the Catalan club expressed interest in signing Alexander-Arnold as part of their search for a new right-back to strengthen their squad for next season.
Barcelona have been linked with the England international for several years. Alexander-Arnold is approaching the final months of his current contract with Liverpool and has yet to agree on an extension.

Real Madrid have been leading the race to secure his signature on a free transfer for months. Reports emerged earlier this week that Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Madrid at the end of his contract.
However, it seems Alexander-Arnold could have ended up at Barcelona instead.
As per Cadena SER, Barcelona’s interest in the player dates back to when Xavi and Jordi Cruyff were still at the club.
Their most recent attempt came earlier this season, when sporting director Deco met with Alexander-Arnold’s agents to explore the feasibility of a move this summer.

But, due to Barcelona’s well-documented financial constraints, a move to Catalonia was deemed unrealistic.
It now appears almost certain that Alexander-Arnold will leave Anfield to join Madrid, with reports suggesting he will sign a five-year deal worth €15million per season.
The full-back remains a key player for Liverpool, who are currently leading the Premier League by 12 points.
Arne Slot’s side will face local rivals Everton in a highly anticipated Merseyside derby next Wednesday, April 2, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
