Manchester United set to battle Chelsea for Premier League star

Delap has reportedly surpassed Gyokeres, Sesko and Osimhen as United’s preferred target

Manchester United are set to compete with Chelsea for the signing of Liam Delap this summer, with the Ipswich Town forward emerging as the club’s preferred solution to their ongoing goalscoring problems, according to ESPN.

Delap has reportedly surpassed Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Victor Osimhen as United’s preferred target.

Ruben Amorim is expected to be backed in the transfer market, with the acquisition of a new centre-forward being a priority despite financial constraints.

Delap, who netted 12 goals in 30 Premier League appearances for Ipswich after completing a £20m move from Manchester City last summer, has emerged as United’s top choice.

The 22-year-old could be available for a relatively affordable £40m if Ipswich are relegated.

United’s interest in Delap comes despite the availability of Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, whose €100m (£85.4m) release clause is in effect, and the fact that Arsenal are reportedly also monitoring the Sweden international.

While Gyokeres impressed under Amorim at Sporting after his £17m move from Coventry in 2023, Delap has emerged as the more attractive option due to his lower cost, younger age, and proven Premier League experience.

Delap is likely to draw attention from other top clubs, including Premier League leaders Liverpool, who could be in the market for a forward if Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah depart this summer.

Chelsea, managed by Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Liam Delap at Manchester City’s academy, could also be a strong contender, further intensifying competition for the 22-year-old.

United’s pursuit of Delap, however, will likely face significant competition from Chelsea, who can offer both financial backing and the appeal of Champions League football next season.
