Argentine side River Plate have been encouraged to sign Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne, whose contract at the club expires at the end of the season.

All good things come to an end, and De Bruyne’s situation at Man City is no exception – with the contract with the Premier League side drawing to a close, fans will be following his next move with keen interest.

There have been recent rumours of a possible switch to the “rich” Saudi League, as well as the Major League Soccer (MLS). But other figures believe a move to Argentina and River Plate will best suit the 33-year-old.

In an interview with River Monumental, former River Plate striker Carlos Morete professed his desperation to see the club bring De Bruyne to South America.

“River has a manager and brains. Maybe they called and I don’t know or it wasn’t made public. Why didn’t anyone take a plane to Manchester and go find out about De Bruyne?” Morete said.

“He’s 33 years old. You pay him $20 million, he’s free, and you see if you bring him in or not.

“He’ll make you a champion, make you fight for championships, and solve all your problems. Go check out his physical condition. He’s a real star, and he’s not that old. Make him an offer.

“He leaves City for free, pay him 20million (£16.7m) Euros a year and bring him in.

“If you buy a player for 14 like the Colombian or 12 for Driussi, you’ve made a million-dollar salad.

“Here you don’t pay a penny for a transfer and you bring in a star. Everything River brought in doesn’t solve anything.”

The Belgium midfielder may not be in his best physical condition, but there is no doubt that he still possesses world-class ability, with a keen eye for a pass and a quality addition to any side, even at the twilight of his career.

De Bruyne has seen limited play time this season, but that’s understandable given his recent injuries and fatigue, mostly found on the bench.

However, it is not certain that the Man City midfielder will be leaving the Citizens this summer, as reports suggest that the former Chelsea and Wolfsburg star could take a pay cut to stay at the club.

De Bruyne joined Man City from German side VfL Wolfsburg for a then-club-record fee of £54m.

He has since gone on to win the UEFA Champions League, six Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, five EFL Cups, and two FA Community Shield to crown a successful career in England.

The attacking midfielder has gone on to make 280 appearances for City, scoring 70 goals while delivering 118 assists in that period, making him the 2nd player with the most assists of all time in the Premier League (Ryan Giggs leads with 162).
