Newcastle United and Chelsea locked in €100m Pavlidis battle

Chelsea and Newcastle are looking to boost their attack with a new striker for next season

Pavlidis for Benfica

Newcastle United and Chelsea have reportedly registered their interest in signing Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who has a €100m release clause.

The Premier League duo are both eyeing the Benfica striker Vangelis but face stiff competition from Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid this summer.

Per Record, Chelsea and Newcastle are leading the race to potentially sign the Greece international next season.

Chelsea are in the hunt for a new frontman who could provide competition to Nicolas Jackson, while the Magpies are reported to be interested in case Alexander Isak leaves -with Liverpool circling.

The 26-year-old has scored 24 goals in 46 games in all competitions and has also provided 10 assists this term.

The Benfica star has a contract with the Portugal league leaders until 2029, having only arrived from AZ Alkmaar in a €20m deal in the summer.

From past deals involving the club, it is likely the Portuguese giants will hold out for his release clause of €100m.

It is, however, unlikely for interested clubs to trigger the clause, but rather prefer to negotiate a much lower fee for the striker, the reports further stated.

It is unclear if Benfica would be willing to entertain any discussion that seeks to renegotiate anything outside the player’s release clause.
