Coventry forward Brandon Thomas-Asante receives late Black Stars call-up

The international break is here — Europe kicks off its new UEFA Nations League campaign in the September-October window, Africa turns to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, and Ghana forward Brandon Thomas-Asante, initially left out of Carlos Queiroz’s squad, has earned a late call-up in place of the injured Prince Adu Kwabena.

Coventry City’s forward will join the Stars in camp in Accra, Ghana. The Black Stars, led by head coach Carlos Queiroz, will face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. They then take on Morocco in an international friendly in Tangier on 4 October.

Mohammed Fuseini will join Thomas-Asante, another late call-up. The withdrawal of players, including Tottenham Hotspur winger Mohammed Kudus and Prince Adu Kwabena, from the international break has prompted the change.

On Saturday, Queiroz announced the 24-man squad. It blends experienced players with emerging talents as he begins a new phase with the national team.

Ghana opens its AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24. The Stars will then host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.

(Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak) is in the goalkeeping department and will be joined by Lawrence Ati-Zigi (St. Gallen), and Joseph Anang, who plays for St Patrick’s Athletic in the Scottish second tier.

In defence are Gideon Mensah, Baba Rahman, Jan Gyamerah, Derrick Luckassen, Jerome Opoku, Kojo Oppong Peprah and Alexander Djiku, and Nathaniel Adjei, who both return to the squad after missing out in the last tournament for various reasons.

The midfield options are Kwasi Sibo, Caleb Yirenkyi, Augustine Boakye, Ronald Donkor and Ibrahim Sulemana.

Christopher Bonsu Baah, Ernest Nuamah, Mohammed Kudus, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Antoine Semenyo, Ibrahim Osman, Prince Adu Kwabena and captain Jordan Ayew will line up as the front men for the squad.

The squad, however, does not include Thomas Partey or Kamaldeen Sulemana, both of whom were part of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Nathaniel Adjei, Ibrahim Osman and Ibrahim Sulemana also return to the squad, while Jan Gyamerah and Ronald Donkor have earned maiden Black Stars call-ups. The GFA has indicated that the two players were rewarded for their recent club form.

Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia are in Group C of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Under the new qualification format, the top two teams in each group qualify for the tournament, with a special arrangement for groups containing the co-hosts.
