Tottenham are eager to sign their first player under new coach Thomas Frank

Mathys Tel for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a permanent deal for Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel following his loan spell with the Premier League club.

According to the online sports outlet, Sky Sports, Tottenham and Bayern Munich are in the final stages of completing a £30 million deal for Mathys Tel.

Tel joined Spurs in January on loan with the idea of converting his loan move to a permanent deal under former boss Ange Postecoglou, who has since been replaced by Thomas Frank – the Europa League winners paid a £7.3 million fee for his short stay in London.

The French under-21 forward started 11 games for Spurs in the Premier League, playing a total of 913 minutes, scoring twice.

The 20-year-old has been a subject of interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, who were looking to lure the youngster in January.

Despite interest from rival Premier League clubs, Spurs boss Thomas Frank has given the green light to the deal.

Tottenham are now keen on securing Tel’s services permanently, viewing him as a key part of their plans.

According to reports, Tottenham had until early June to exercise a €50 million purchase option for Tel.

However, Spurs have been actively working behind the scenes to renegotiate the fee, aiming to reduce the cost of making the move permanent.

Tel’s journey to Tottenham began after a promising stint at Bayern, where he arrived from Rennes in July 2022 for €20 million.

Under the guidance of former Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel in the 2023/24 campaign, he played a pivotal role, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances.

However, his playing time faded after Vincent Kompany’s appointment as Bayern’s manager, prompting the loan move to Tottenham.

Under the Belgian manager at Bayern, Tel struggled to find consistent minutes, playing just 466 minutes in 14 games.

Today’s update on Tel could confirm any such report of Tottenham’s intent on signing the talented forward should the North London side succeed in their £30 million cut-price bid.
