Phil Foden signs new contract with man city

Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement with Phil Foden to extend his contract until 2030, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The English international’s current contract with the Cityzens was set to expire in June 2027, but will now be extended for a further four years with an option of another year.

The English midfielder, though out of favour with Pep Guardiola this season, is still regarded as an important member of the squad, with both the manager and club hierarchy understood to have full confidence in his ability — a factor behind the decision to extend his contract.

The 25-year-old, since his breakthrough season under Guardiola, has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and five Carabao Cups since making his debut aged 17 in 2017.

Although he’s not had more minutes on the field for City this season, the English international has still managed to score 10 goals and provided five assists in 46 appearances in all competitions for City in the campaign.

Foden has recorded an all-time low number, contributing less for City, compared to his career-best season in 2023/24, winning Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

His recent struggles are unexpected for a player once heralded as the next big thing in English football, and who had previously been seen as a potential successor to Jamie Vardy as the league’s next English Player of the Season.

Foden has demostrated flashed of his old self whenever given the opportunity; however, there is always some doubt about his confidence that is difficult to explain.

He has, however, slipped down the pecking order, with Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, and Jérémy Doku all favoured in attacking roles, while Nico O’Reilly has been deployed ahead of him in midfield.

The 49-cap England forward’s contract extension underlines the club’s faith in their academy graduate. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, a strong finish to the season in City’s final games could yet strengthen his case for a place in England national football team manager Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

For now, his situation reflects the fine margins at the very top of the game. Talent alone is rarely enough — consistency, timing, and trust often define a player’s trajectory.

With his future now secured, the next few months could prove decisive in determining whether he rediscovers the form that once made him one of English football’s brightest prospects or continues to drift on the fringes of City’s dreams for him.
