Michael Carrick is expected to sign a two-year contract as Manchester United’s head coach
Man Utd seal permanent Michael Carrick appointment

Interim manager Michael Carrick has been very impressive since taking the role following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, guiding Manchester United to 11 wins in 16 games in charge and securing Champions League football at Old Trafford for next season.
Carrick’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, prompting Man United to open talks with the English manager about the vacant permanent role since he assumed the interim role on January 13.
Man United and Carrick had reached an agreement in principle over the club’s permanent head coach role on May 13, 2026, with only the final contractual details and backroom arrangements left to be resolved.

Manchester United were expected to confirm Michael Carrick for the permanent managerial position within the month after he surpassed every target set by the club, leaving senior figures increasingly convinced that no other candidate had done enough to displace him from the role.
A confirmation on Friday will hand the former midfielder a two-year contract with an option for a further year following the final home game of the season, against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Top decision-makers at United, including director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, are convinced Wallsend, Tyne and Wear-born, has earned the opportunity to lead the club long-term after overseeing an impressive run of results.

The English manager has not only qualified them for Champions League football, but also did so effortlessly with victories over rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in just 15 matches.
The 44-year-old has been the leading contender for the permanent role at Old Trafford, even though United chiefs were believed to be considering other candidates before arriving at their conclusion.

The former Red Devils midfielder has won over senior figures at the club through his strong relationship with the squad, calm and assured media presence, and deep appreciation of the club’s identity, while his impressive results on the pitch have further strengthened belief in his leadership credentials.
In a statement on the club’s website, Carrick said: “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.
“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
The club now finish the season against Brighton & Hove Albion, but planning for the new year is underway, with Carrick in charge.
