Real Madrid halt Barcelona streak with Clasico win

Real Madrid ended Barcelona’s La Liga winning run with a 2-1 win at Camp Nou on Sunday, as Kylian Mbappe scored twice to hand the league leaders their first defeat of the season.

Jose Mourinho made a strong return to El Clasico, leading Madrid to victory away from home against their biggest rivals in his second spell as manager, 13 years after his first stint at the club.

The win was Mourinho’s sixth El Clasico victory as Real Madrid manager.

Mbappe gave Madrid the lead four minutes before half-time with a deflected effort in a thrilling El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou. Barcelona responded in the 61st minute, with Raphinha bringing the hosts level.

With the game heading towards a draw, Jude Bellingham produced a brilliant piece of skill before setting up Eduardo Camavinga, whose cutback found Mbappe in the 87th minute.

The French forward finished from close range to seal a 2-1 win for Madrid and move within three points of their rivals — an important victory that ends the Blaugrana’s 9-game La Liga winning streak.

The win also handed Hansi Flick’s side their first domestic defeat of the season, and delivered Madrid their first win in three years.

The loss adds to a bad week for Flick’s side, whose 11-game winning streak at the start of this season was halted with defeat in the Champions League at Paris St-Germain.

Mourinho’s men had been excellent, and throughout the contest they showed they were willing to go head-to-head with their more favoured hosts.

But Mourinho and Real Madrid will leave Spotify Camp Nou beaming and punching the air with excitement after giving their small away fans something bigger worth celebrating.
