UCL: Real Madrid break Atletico’s hearts again with dramatic last 16 penalty shootout

REAL Madrid

Real Madrid booked a place to the UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the expense of City rivals Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Wanda Metropolitano.

After only 27 seconds on the night, Atletico midfielder Conor Gallagher made history by grabbing the opener of the night to set the record as the fastest ever goal scored by an English player in Champions League history.

The game remained close until the break as Real looked to grab the equaliser on their return from the tunnel.

In the second half, Los Blancos came close on several occasions through the likes of Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Goes, yet their efforts did very little in troubling Jan Oblak.

Soon came the defining moment of the 90 minutes for Madrid as Kylian Mbappe was brought down in the Atletico box for a foul with Vinicius Jr expected to step up from 12 yards.

The Brazilian’s effort was placed way over the goal, and that inspired Atletico to believe they could knock out their rivals at home come the end of the game.

However, both teams failed to find the back of the net and the tie was then to be decided in extra time before it ultimately went down to a penalty shootout.

Julian Alvarez and Marcos Llorente failed to convert from the spot for the hosts, and Rudiger made sure Madrid’s final spot kick had enough power to go past Oblak.

It ended 4-2 in favour of Real on penalties after the game was level on aggregate in a 1-1 result.

Real Madrid have once again sailed past their rivals Atletico, and will now face Arsenal in a crunch last eight clash.
