AC Milan and Inter Milan are set to submit their economic plans for a new stadium in the San Siro area today, according to Milan Mayor Beppe Sala. If their bid is successful, construction could begin as early as 2027.
The Italian Tax Office valued the iconic Stadio Meazza and its surrounding area at approximately €200 million last October. Speaking to RTL 102.5 via Gazzetta, Mayor Sala confirmed that the clubs are expected to present their official offer and financial plan.
“I hope the clubs will submit the offer and the economic plan today,” Sala stated. “Once received, a public tender must still be issued as required by law, but the intention is for the area to remain dedicated to football. The tender process will take 30-45 days, and our goal is to finalize the sale before the summer holidays.”
New Stadium Details & Timeline
- Construction Start: 2027
- Completion Target: 2030
- Capacity: Approx. 71,500 seats (including 13,000 for corporate and hospitality areas)
- Investment: Over €1 billion
- Location: Parking lots behind the west stand of Stadio Meazza
The project aims to develop a modern football venue while preserving the existing San Siro. Due to its cultural significance, the Stadio Meazza cannot be demolished. Instead, once the new stadium is complete, the old structure will undergo redevelopment, remaining largely intact until at least 2030.
Originally, Milan and Inter planned to build a stadium named The Cathedral, but that proposal was scrapped due to restrictions on demolishing the Meazza.
This marks a crucial step in the clubs’ long-awaited efforts to modernize their home while preserving San Siro’s legacy. Stay tuned for further updates on the bidding process and official approval.
