Marc Cucurella leaves Chelsea to Real Madrid

Chelsea have confirmed the permanent transfer of defender Marc Cucurella to La Liga side Real Madrid on Monday, just 24 hours after an agreement was reached between the two clubs for the player.

The Spanish international will join Los Blancos from the Blues for approximately £51.7 million (€60 million), which includes an initial fee of £47.4 million plus add-ons. The transfer is expected to be formalised after the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Cucurella has been the subject of growing speculation this summer, with Atlético Madrid reportedly in talks with Chelsea over a potential move, while his former academy club, Barcelona were also understood to be monitoring the situation.

The Spanish left-back will leave Chelsea four years after signing from Brighton in a £60 million move, and has since made 163 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, scoring nine goals and assisting 13.

The Blues have officially confirmed the transfer on X and on the club’s website, thanking him for his services and wishing him success as he begins a new chapter of his career at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Cucurella joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion and was part of the team that lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year.

“During Cucurella’s stay at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old defender regularly represented the Spanish national team and won the UEFA European Championships in 2024.

“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements.

“We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”

Reports linking him with a move to the Bernabéu came as a surprise, particularly in light of his recent comments about his future after discussions with the North London side’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, whom he said had given him renewed confidence in the project.

“Yes. I’ve spoken with him, and he inspired a lot of confidence in me.

“I’ve also spoken with Grimaldo and Borja, who have worked with him, and they spoke very highly of him. The project seems very interesting.”

Madrid has also confirmed the Spanish defender’s permanent signing, while he continues to concentrate on national duties with the Spanish national team at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.

Since joining Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton, he has made 163 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, scoring nine goals and assisting 13.
