Jose Mourinho returns to the Spanish capital after 13 years, in a second stint with Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho seals dramatic Real Madrid return

Josse Mourinho has completed a sensational return to Real Madrid as the new permanent head coach, signing a three-year contract with the La Liga giants.
Mourinho will take over from interim head coach Alvaro Arbeloa on Thursday, the day the first game of the FIFA World Cup commences, following Xabi Alonso’s departure on January 12, a day after the team’s loss in the Supercopa de España final to Barcelona.
Madrid are reportedly expected to sort out a reasonable €15 million compensation fee to Mourinho’s former side, Benfica, which was always considered an easy matter by Los Blancos Chiefs.

The Portuguese manager’s arrival dashes Arbeloa’s hopes of turning his temporary role into a long-term position, after the painful and striking disappointment of Real’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich, coupled with a very distasteful dressing-room tension with some senior players.
The Special One reportedly agreed a deal in principle with the Spanish giants on Monday, 18, 2026, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano breaking the news with his signature announcement, “Here we go”.
Mourinho’s return to the Bernabeu dugout will be his second stint at the club, 13 years since his first one, after positive talks between both parties.
Los Blancos president Florentino Perez personally led the chase for the Benfica boss, who had a deal containing a release clause away from the Portuguese club.
However, the official announcement for the Portuguese return was delayed due to the club’s proposed election schedule for 7 June.
The club, in a statement, will go on to officially confirm Mourinho as the head coach of the 15-time Champions League winners today, as the 2026 World Cup starts.
“The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.
“José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.”

Meanwhile, Perez confirmed the Portuguese’s imminent return in his speech after seeing off the challenge of Enrique Riquelme, after the club’s presidential election, having made no secret of his intention to name Mourinho as head coach should he seal an eighth term in the role.
In quotes on the club’s official website, Perez said: “We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles.
“I am still here and I am here to defend Real Madrid.
“We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup.
“We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the best stadium in the world.
“Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista like Jose Mourinho. And rest assured, with me as president, Real Madrid has been, is, and will always remain owned by its members.”

The 63-year-old manager left Real Madrid during his first stint in 2013, winning three trophies (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España) during his three-year tenure with the 15-time Champions League winners.
During his time at the Bernabéu, Mourinho’s side broke several records, including the most points (100) and goals scored (121) in a single La Liga season in 2011/12.
The self-acclaimed “Special One” will now take over the mantle from Arbeloa, who stood in as interim manager after the sacking of Xabi Alonso, signing a three-year contract until 2029.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is expected to tackle Real’s biggest problem first – the dressing-room issues Alonso left behind in January, which have since spiralled out of control.

Tensions at the training ground are understood to have been simmering for some time, but the situation escalated dramatically earlier in the final days of the league when Federico Valverde was hospitalised following an altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Mourinho believes his strict management style could restore order, and he has reportedly held discussions with potential club chiefs about players who may cause the biggest issues if he takes charge.
The Portuguese coach is understood to be convinced that his strong personality, vast experience, and strict standards could rapidly restore discipline and unity within the squad, bringing stability after months of unrest behind the scenes.
