Tottenham lead chase to sign Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth

Marcos Senesi’s contract with Bournemouth expires at the end of this season

Marcos Sanesi will leave Bournemouth on a free transfer this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the chase to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, who will be on a free transfer this summer, after resigning to renew his contract with the Premier League side.

Spurs have emerged as frontrunners for the signature of the Argentine centre-back, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Liverpool were reportedly ready to take advantage of the situation to secure Senesi’s signature on a free transfer, as they remain uncertain over the renewal of French defender Ibrahima Konate’s contract.

The 28-year-old has many suitors in the Premier League as well, including Manchester United and Chelsea. However, the Blues have reportedly pulled out of a potential transfer tag of war, leaving the north London side at an advantageous stage to sign the player.

Meanwhile, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also known to be admirers of the Argentina international. But it appears Tottenham have shot to the front of the queue.

According to Athletic journalist David Ornstein, the north London outfit are in advanced talks to sign Senesi in the summer. However, the deal hinges on Tottenham’s status as a Premier League club.

Spurs sit 18th in the top flight with six games remaining, and they sit two points from safety ahead of the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion to the capital on Saturday evening.

Ornstein adds that any deal also depends on Tottenham maintaining their Premier League status, which they are not currently set to do, looking at their current standings.

Spurs are keen to strengthen in the centre-back position this summer, with doubts over the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, who will both want to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of their careers.

In addition to advancing talks for Senesi, they have also agreed a deal to sign another soon-to-be free agent in Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.

Similar to Senesi’s deal, that deal will also depend on Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs staying up in the Premier League, but if they do, it would be a big boost to add two highly-experienced top-flight defenders to the ranks for next season.
