Tottenham Hotspur have been relentless and ruthless in their transfer pursuits, arguably for the first time, under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, completing their sixth signing of the transfer, following the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali for a fee worth £100 million.

Tonali, who joined Newcastle from Italian Serie A giants AC Milan in July 2023 for a reported fee in the region of £55 million, has completed his move to the Spurs, signing a six-year deal until 2032.

At the time, the Italian midfielder was one of the most sought-after players from several European suitors, including Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, and Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.

During his time with the Magpies, the 26-year-old Sandro Tonali won the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) in the 2024–25 season, where he played the full 90 minutes in the final, which marked the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

In the early weeks of July, Spurs moved quickly to reach an agreement with Premier League rivals Newcastle to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali for a fee worth £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in potential add-ons, according to journalist David Ornstein.

The renowned journalist further revealed that the £7.5 million add-ons will be based on Spurs’ multiple Champions League qualifications.

De Zerbi has wrapped up the London club’s second major midfield signing within a space of 24 hours after reaching a £83.79 million agreement with West Ham on 30 June, to bring in Mateus Fernandes.

Tonali’s addition becomes De Zerbi’s sixth signing after securing the signatures of Marcos Senesi (Bournemouth), Jan Paul van Hecke (Brighton), Andy Robertson (Liverpool), Martin Dubravka (Newcastle), and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

The Italian midfielder is expected to earn more than £275,000 per week, and is keen to work under Spurs boss and fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi, despite interest from elsewhere, including Manchester City.

It is the second-highest fee Newcastle have ever received for a player. The highest was the £125 million that Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer.

Speaking after his arrival in north London, Tonali told the club’s official website: “I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.

“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.

“I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”

De Zerbi added: “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club. I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I’m so happy to be working with him now.

“Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”

Spurs have now eclipsed their previous record spending in a single transfer window. The club’s £185 million investment in Fernandes and Tonali takes their total outlay this summer to £237 million, surpassing the £225 million spent during the 2023 summer window.
