Carlos Queiroz appointed Black Stars coach

Queiroz will face Mexico in his first game in charge of Ghana national football team.

The Ghana Football Association has officially appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision, taken by the Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, sees the experienced Portuguese tactician replace Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties following Ghana’s international friendly against Germany.

Queiroz arrives with an impressive résumé, having managed top sides including Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national teams such as Portugal and Iran.

Renowned for his vast World Cup experience, he guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

The veteran coach has also had spells with Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, bringing a wealth of international experience to the Black Stars setup.

Queiroz will immediately begin preparations as Ghana gears up for the tournament, set to kick off on June 11, 2026, across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Ghana will open their Group campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in subsequent matches.
